What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a protective “cap” that fits over the visible portion of a damaged tooth. It mimics the size, shape, and color of the underlying structure, shielding it from future reinfection while allowing it to strengthen over time.

Our dental office uses porcelain materials to craft these custom restorations so that they look natural and function just like regular teeth.

Dr. Swingdorf will usually recommend a dental crown if you have:

  • A cracked tooth
  • A broken tooth
  • Severe tooth decay
  • A tooth that requires a root canal
  • A dental implant being put into place to replace a missing tooth

The Dental Crown Process

At Chaska Dental Center, we are pleased to provide patients with an opportunity to receive a customized dental crown much quicker thanks to CEREC technology and our in-house milling unit. Whether you choose to receive your crown on the same day or pursue a more traditional route, the initial stages remain the same.

Your dentist will begin by cleaning the tooth and removing any decayed or damaged areas to ensure the remaining structure is free of any harmful bacteria or tissue. After filling the space and altering the size of the tooth, he will take impressions so that a new, customized crown can be created.

If a more traditional process is followed, the impression will be sent to an outside laboratory for technicians to begin fabricating the crown. This can take a few weeks, so you’ll be required to wear a temporary in the meantime.

If you prefer to receive your crown on the same day, the impression will be sent to our in-house milling unit, where a block of porcelain will be inserted. The machine will then use the detailed image to create a natural-looking crown while you wait.

Once it is finished, our team will remove the restoration from the unit and give it a thorough polish before bonding it over your tooth to ensure a proper fit.
